SCHOLARSHIP FOR A LIVINGSTON HS SENIOR

The Scholarship Committee, consisting of Grace Tse, Robin

Weiss and Judith Friedman, reviewed over 40 applications and

chose Gianna Campisi on the basis of need, community service

and upper half of her senior class scholastically.  The award is

$500.  Gianna plans to attend Montclair University and become

an educator hoping “to help others understand the strength and

fragility of the human condition.”  Gianna understands this

already having suffered several losses of loved ones.  However,

she has shown great leadership enhancing cheerleading skills

of her peers, organizing many events to help her late friend,

Brielle Namer and lobbying the US Senate to install ignition

interlock devices on the cars of repeat offenders who are drunk

drivers.  She has been working since she was 14 to relieve some

of the financial burden from a widowed parent.

Special thanks to Judy Friedman for her generous contribution

to the LWV.  If anyone would like to make a contribution, please

              BOARD OF ED CANDIDATES NIGHT

Our meeting with the candidates on March 18 will not follow the

usual formal format, i.e., moderator, timekeeper and specific

questions posed to the candidates.  Instead, because there are

only two candidates, the meeting will be of a more informal nature

with questions and answers and discussions from the audience.

SENIOR SCHOLARSHIP FOR LIVINGSTON HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT

Our League will be awarding a $500 scholarship to a Livingston

senior on June 3rd.  Call 973-994-1935 (Judy Friedman) to serve

on the committee.

FINANCES

Currently, our finances indicate a negative balance of almost $2,000.

Recognizing that the economy is in a terrible slump and we are all

tightening our belts, we are, however, asking the membership if they

could make a contribution at this time. Checks should be made

payable to ¡§LWV Education Fund¡¨, which is tax deductible, and

mailed to P.O.Box 583, Livingston, NJ 07039.

Our money is tied up in gift cards (vouchers) for Shop Rite,

Kings and Pathmark, which must be paid for up front.  Most of us

have to grocery shop anyway, and if we all bought some gift cards,

available in $50 increments, it would be most helpful.  And they make

wonderful gifts, too, as I¡¦m sure we all know someone who would

appreciate receiving one¡K. or two¡K during these difficult times.

HELP LWVNJ ‘GO GREEN’

CHOOSE TO RECEIVE THE NJVOTER BY E-MAIL.

If you send the LWVNJ office (contact@lwvnj.org) your name and address, you will be taken off the paper-mailing list and you NJ Voter will arrive quickly and efficiently to your Inbox each quarter.  You can read it online or you can print out specific sections, as you wish.  You can also save back issues without clutter.

Your action will help preserve trees, with their wonderful qualities of absorbing carbon dioxide, producing oxygen, and holding down the soil (among others), and reduce the amount of paper that you need to recycle.  (You do recycle paper and cans and bottles, right?)

Even though our NJ Voter is printed on recycled paper, simply using less paper is the best way to cut down on waste.  And allowing us to send it by email will mean that LWVNJ can use more of the money you donate on fulfilling our mission, since both printing and mailing costs will be reduced.

The Fall issue is already in process, so everyone will get a paper copy in mid to late October, but we hope that many sign up now so that the Winter issue is largely sent by email.

Thanks!

Anne Malese, President

IN MEMORIAM

We are all saddened by the death of Ella Meyer.  She served as Editor of the COMMENTATOR

corresponding secretary, and hostess to many meetings at her home.  She was a representative to state conventions and workshops, registrar of voters and enthusiastic supporter.  She and her husband, Ben, were very influential in getting the Senior Center built and keeping the Livingston Library in its present location.

Ella was a Democratic Committeewoman, a member of the Library Board, and Treasurer of the Livingston Democratic Party.  She was a lover of travel, theatre and good food.  Ella was a collector of all kinds of jokes, which she loved to share.  I have my favorites and, probably, everyone who knew her does too.

IN MEMORIAM

Our sincerest condolences go out to our League member, Rose Zeltser, on the death of her beloved husband, Ronald, on Friday, October 6.  For those of you who do not have email addresses, the funeral services will be on Tuesday, October 10 at 11 AM at the Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Funeral Home, 68 Old Short Hills Road, Livingston.  You can visit Rose at

her home, 38 No. Mitchell Ave. on Wednesday and Thursday from 4 to 9 PM.  Rose and Ronald have been Livingston residents since 1979.  He was a certified public accountant for over 40 years.  In his youth, he trained as a Navy Seal and was drafted by the University of Texas.  Beside his beloved Rose, he leaves a loving mother, Yetta (nee Waldman), and his loving children, Karen Kosner and Mark.
