SCHOLARSHIP FOR A LIVINGSTON HS SENIOR
The Scholarship Committee, consisting of Grace Tse, Robin
Weiss and Judith Friedman, reviewed over 40 applications and
chose Gianna Campisi on the basis of need, community service
and upper half of her senior class scholastically. The award is
$500. Gianna plans to attend Montclair University and become
an educator hoping “to help others understand the strength and
fragility of the human condition.” Gianna understands this
already having suffered several losses of loved ones. However,
she has shown great leadership enhancing cheerleading skills
of her peers, organizing many events to help her late friend,
Brielle Namer and lobbying the US Senate to install ignition
interlock devices on the cars of repeat offenders who are drunk
drivers. She has been working since she was 14 to relieve some
of the financial burden from a widowed parent.

Our meeting with the candidates on March 18 will not follow the

FINANCES
Currently, our finances indicate a negative balance of almost $2,000.
Recognizing that the economy is in a terrible slump and we are all
tightening our belts, we are, however, asking the membership if they
could make a contribution at this time. Checks should be made
payable to ¡§LWV Education Fund¡¨, which is tax deductible, and
mailed to P.O.Box 583, Livingston, NJ 07039.
Our money is tied up in gift cards (vouchers) for Shop Rite,
Kings and Pathmark, which must be paid for up front. Most of us
have to grocery shop anyway, and if we all bought some gift cards,
available in $50 increments, it would be most helpful. And they make
wonderful gifts, too, as I¡¦m sure we all know someone who would
appreciate receiving one¡K. or two¡K during these difficult times.

HELP LWVNJ ‘GO GREEN’
CHOOSE TO RECEIVE THE NJVOTER BY E-MAIL.
If you send the LWVNJ office (contact@lwvnj.org) your name and address, you will be taken off the paper-mailing list and you NJ Voter will arrive quickly and efficiently to your Inbox each quarter. You can read it online or you can print out specific sections, as you wish. You can also save back issues without clutter.
Your action will help preserve trees, with their wonderful qualities of absorbing carbon dioxide, producing oxygen, and holding down the soil (among others), and reduce the amount of paper that you need to recycle. (You do recycle paper and cans and bottles, right?)
Even though our NJ Voter is printed on recycled paper, simply using less paper is the best way to cut down on waste. And allowing us to send it by email will mean that LWVNJ can use more of the money you donate on fulfilling our mission, since both printing and mailing costs will be reduced.
The Fall issue is already in process, so everyone will get a paper copy in mid to late October, but we hope that many sign up now so that the Winter issue is largely sent by email.
Thanks!
